The Arizona Republican Party wants a judge to order Maricopa County election officials to audit ballots by voting precinct, even though the county used vote centers to host the 2020 election.
But it’s unclear if that’s even possible.
County election officials already conducted a hand count audit of ballots cast at the roughly 175 vote centers used on Election Day. Attorneys for the Republican Party argue that, by law, the votes should instead be organized and audited by each voters’ assigned precinct.
Joseph LaRue, an attorney for Maricopa County, said that’s not required by law, and it’s not how the votes are organized. LaRue told a Maricopa County Superior Court judge on Monday that he’s uncertain if ballots can be organized by precincts after the fact.
LaRue also said the case may be moot in a matter of days. The county plans to certify the election results as earlier as Thursday, and no later than Friday.
Attorneys for the Republican Party said they’ll ask the judge to delay certification.
