Arizona Breweries Look For Pathways To Sustainability

Arizona State University is doing research on how to make local craft brewing into a sustainable industry.

That research was the topic of a recent workshop, which focused on topics such as water conservation, renewable energy, recycling and local crops. It also addressed gender balance and diversity in the workplace.

The added expense of sustainability can be challenging to small businesses, but Charles Morrow, of Arizona Wilderness Brewing, said that most local brewers are committed to the concept.

“When I think about what ties them all together is that they’re all engaged. Right? And I use that in terms of really their community. I think it’s something about the craft brewing industry — you only get into it, if you’re interested in your community,” Morrow said.

Morrow said Arizona Wilderness uses Verde Valley-produced malt and has switched to Arizona grass-fed beef in its restaurants.
