In Wake of Violence, Authorities Make 6 Weekend Arrests In Caborca

State and federal authorities arrested six people over the weekend in Caborca, a northwestern Sonora city that has seen a number of recent violent incidents.

The armed men are being investigated for attempted murder, among other crimes, according to a government release. The gunmen were arrested after a shootout with police, during which officers weren’t injured.

Including those, authorities say there have been 25 arrests in the region in recent weeks, along with the seizure of 10 guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, narcotics and several stolen vehicles.

A week ago a young child was among several killed in a spate of violence in the city, which has seen murder jump dramatically over the last year. Through October, there have been 92 murder investigations in Caborca, giving it one of the highest rates in the country among cities with more than 50,000 people, according to KJZZ analysis of federal data.
