Commercial operations at the major border port in Nogales will soon be open seven days a week all year.
There had already been seasonal Sunday service during parts of the year with heavy imports. But starting in late January, seven-day service will be year-round, according to a release from the local port authority.
“Crops grow seven days a week,” said Scott Vandervoet, a Nogales fresh produce importer and marketer. “And during peak production periods, the harvest crews work seven days a week. So the produce keeps flowing, and it's impor to have the logistic supply chain accommodate the produce.”
Other major ports already offer a similar service, according to Vandervoet.
Nearly 350,000 trucks crossed through Nogales in 2019, hauling billionsof dollars worth of commodities, according to federal data. August and September truck crossings were up significantly over the previous year.
