MEXICO CITY — The chief of staff for Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has resigned after two years in office. His departure is raising concerns, and prompting some changes.
Alfonso Romo is a prominent businessman who had served as the president's chief of staff since the beginning of the López Obrador administration.
Romo has been one of the president’s closest allies dating back to his time as a candidate. Sources say his connections to the business community helped ease tensions between the current administration and the private sector.
"He (Romo) will continue collaborating with me as our main liaison with the private sector," López Obrador said.
But some business lobbies have already expressed their concerns about Romo leaving his official position.
López Obrador says the chief of staff office will be shut down, as he considers it irrelevant now.
