Arizona’s congressional delegation sent a letter to House and Senate leadership Thursday, emphasizing the need to include funding for land ports of entry in the 2021 appropriations bill.
All nine of Arizona’s U.S. representatives, along with several colleagues from Texas and California, asked members of the appropriations committee to make funding for modernizations and construction projects at land ports of entry a “top priority.”
In the letter, they requested that $2.8 billion of funding be appropriated for the ports. They called them "critical to our national security and economy," but said many are outdated — leading to congestion, long waits and safety concerns.
Three Arizona ports are among those considered most in need of upgrades: the San Luis Port of Entry and the commercial and non-commercial ports in Douglas.
