As the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Arizona, a rift between in-school sessions versus online learning continues.

The Arizona Education Association Vice President Marisol Garcia says the community, teachers and parents included, needs to collectively work together to decrease the spread of the virus.

Garcia says the priority should be safety and that either means online learning or a statewide plan to make in-person learning less risky.

“This week we lost another teacher to COVID," Garcia said. "And I just keep wondering like at what number do we need to hit for this to be taken seriously? What number, how many people need to be ill? What’s the number that we need to hit? Because people’s lives, innocent lives, are being lost.”

Garcia is heartened that teachers are among the first to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

In the meantime, Garcia continues to call for collaboration and a coordinated approach to help mitigate the spread of the virus.
