Next week, Maricopa and Pima counties will receive the first COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine shipment. More rural counties will have to wait a bit longer.
The Pfizer vaccine requires special equipment since it must be stored at about 94 degrees below zero. The shipments are coming in at a minimum of nearly 1,000 doses. With these two factors in mind, Maricopa and Pima were picked to go first, out of practicality.
The following week, the Moderna vaccine, which can be stored at relatively warmer temperatures and be shipped in less quantity, will be sent for the rest of Arizona. People will need two shots for the vaccines to be fully effective.
Health officials say it could be summer or early fall before everyone in Arizona can be vaccinated.
