Women and gender studies programs are common at universities across the country these days, but that definitely was not the case in the 1970s.
In 1975, the University of Arizona started its women’s studies department and was within the first 20 such programs in the nation. The 45th anniversary of the department is being marked by the " Founding Mothers: From the Ballot Box to the University" exhibit at the university, and it’s being presented online because of the continuing pandemic.
For an overall perspective on the program and its origins, The Show spoke with Patricia MacCorquodale, professor emerita at the University of Arizona. MacCorquodale was one of the leaders in creating the women’s studies program.
