MEXICO CITY — Mexico City is home to one of the most revered images of Jesus’ mother, attracting hundreds of thousands of Catholic pilgrims annually. But this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has halted festivities.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe will shut its doors for its Dec. 12 celebrations, the day that commemorates the alleged revelation of Mary to an indigenous man almost 500 years ago.
Mexico City’s government ordered a lockdown of the temple’s perimeter and shut down subway stations nearby.
The Mexican Archdiocese announced celebrations would be held online and on TV, while the Pope gave his blessing to those celebrating from home.
But that, and the fast-growing number of COVID-19 cases in Mexico City, hasn't stopped the arrival of thousands who believe that their faith is stronger than the virus.
