Mexico’s government is repatriating the ashes of Mexican nationals who died of COVID-19 overseas. The majority are coming from the United States.
Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations is coordinating the repatriation of urns with the ashes of Mexicans who died abroad from coronavirus and whose families requested the remains.
According to the secretary, 397 funerary urns have been repatriated so far during the pandemic.
Mexico recently received 20 urns from different cities in the U.S. Their transportation was coordinated by consular representations.
The urns are delivered directly to local state governments, which transfer them to their final destinations. In other cases, the urns are delivered by the secretary’s Office for Protection of Mexicans Abroad.
Sonora, the state neighboring Arizona, is among the locations where recently shipped urns are being sent.
