The Maricopa County Community College District is canceling its indoor athletics programs for the spring 2021 semester.
The most recent COVID-19 data led leaders with the district to cancel all indoor athletics programs and temporarily postpone outdoor athletic programs until at least Feb. 1.
Citing the significant spike in coronavirus cases after the Thanksgiving holiday, district officials said the trend was likely to continue after the month-long winter break.
The cancelations and postponements could be adjusted or revoked if the state, county or the National Junior College Athletic Association revise their recommendations.
The suspensions will not have an effect on scholarships for student athletes, and this season will not count against their eligibility for future seasons.
