COVID-19 Cancels Guaranteed Rate Bowl In Downtown Phoenix

A Pac-12 versus Big 12 matchup for the 50th anniversary Fiesta Bowl has been set, but the local appetizer college football bowl game was canceled due to the pandemic.

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl was supposed to be held at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix on Dec. 26.

The decades-old game is organized by the Fiesta Bowl. Officials said in a news release that much work went into coming up with a plan to host the Guaranteed Rate Bowl safely. And they feel disappointed that a pair of quality college football teams will not play this year.

SportsReference.com says more than 34,000 people were at the contest last year, which had a different sponsor.

The University of Oregon and Iowa State University are scheduled to play the Fiesta Bowl’s golden anniversary game to a stadium of empty seats on Jan. 2.
