The Havasupai Tribal Council has voted to extend its suspension of tourism until further notice. The Grand Canyon tribe has been aggressive in its management of the pandemic, and so far, there have been no reported cases of coronavirus in Supai Village.
The council suspended tourism in mid-March, and trips to Havasu Canyon and its iconic waterfalls have been closed ever since. The tribe is not issuing refunds but encourages people with reservations to reschedule their trip. Spokeswoman Abbie Fink says the tribe hopes to reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.
“Tourism is one of their primary sources of income and this decision was certainly not made lightly," said Fink. "But the process to close down the tourism enterprise was done over the course of several conversations with tribal council and looking at what options might be available.”
