One of several Sonoran groups searching for missing loved ones made a disturbing discovery this week.
The Madres Buscadoras de Sonora, or the Sonoran Searching Mothers of Sonora, say they found a number of burned bodies in what they’re describing as a clandestine crematorium near the coastal city of Guaymas.
“There aren’t words for what we experienced yesterday,” said group founder Ceci Patricia Flores.
She estimated that a few dozen bodies were found over two days. A spokesperson for the Sonoran attorney general’s office was unable to provide a body count.
In recent years, dozens of clandestine graves have been found in the state, many first discovered by groups like Flores’. The vast, sparsely populated state accounts for nearly 8% of all Mexico's missing people in recent years, according to a November report.
