On Mexico’s four-color coronavirus risk semáforo, or traffic light, Sonora is at orange, or high risk, along with 23 other Mexican states.
But it’s one of six a top health official says could soon go to red, or maximum risk.
“We’re paying close attention to that precisely in order to prevent them from rising to a higher risk level,” Health Secretary Dr. Jorge Alcocer said Thursday.
State data tracked by the University of Sonora shows rising cases, deaths and hospital bed occupancy in recent weeks. The state has regularly been reporting daily deaths of 20 or more, numbers not seen since the first wave in the summer.
