The year 2020 was surely a strange and scary time to give birth, but over 70,000 women brought tiny bundles of joy into Arizona this year.
The Arizona Department of Health Services tracks birth records and releases lists of the 100 most popular baby names for girls and boys each year. Across Arizona, more than one of every 100 girls born this year are named Olivia. That’s followed by Emma, Sophia and Mia.
For boys, the name Liam takes the top spot. Then comes Noah, Oliver and Mateo.
The COVID-19 pandemic may have transformed what it's like to give birth in 2020, but it didn't diminish the popularity of the names Liam and Olivia. Both were the most popular baby names for 2019, as well.
The health services department's data shows Arizona averaged 6,390 births monthly for 2020, representing the lowest average this decade. In fact, births have been trending downward in Arizona since 2014, when the state averaged 7,221 births per month.
