An Arizona corporation headquartered in Phoenix has agreed to pay the United States nearly $180 million to resolve claims that it received overpayments from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
TriWest Healthcare Alliance corporation administers government health care programs, coordinating medical appointments and making payments to health care providers.
The Justice Department announced Thursday that TriWest had received overpayments through two VA health care programs that were created to enable veterans to obtain medical care from providers in their communities.
In some cases, TriWest was paid twice. In others, the Phoenix-based company received payment for services in which it had already been reimbursed.
In a statement, the Justice Department said it would continue to work with the VA and its Office of Inspector General "to ensure that the VA’s programs are administered properly and that taxpayer funds are used as intended."
