No Criminal Charges For Phoenix Police Officer Who Threatened Mayor

The Maricopa County attorney will not be filing criminal charges against a Phoenix police officer who threatened to shoot the mayor.

The Office of Mayor Kate Gallego announced in October that a credible threat had been made against her by a member of the Phoenix Police Department.

A criminal investigation was conducted by the Tempe Police Department while the Phoenix Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau is conducting an internal investigation.

On Tuesday, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced it "cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Officer Steven Poulos’ statements constituted a “true threat” as defined by Arizona Law and the U.S. constitution."

A spokesperson for the county attorney called the statements inexcusable but said legal precedent prevents a reasonable likelihood of conviction at trial.
