The fight over marriage equality in Sonora is far from over.
Last September, a reform that would have allowed same-sex Sonoran couples to wed like their straight compatriots failed in committee by a single vote, ending for the time being a more than yearlong legislative journey.
Since then, however, a number of Sonoran attorneys have or are soon to request that federal courts step in.
“We’re looking for the federal district court in its ruling to oblige the state congress or governor” to abide by a 2015 Mexican Supreme Court ruling that state prohibitions of same-sex marriages like Sonora’s are unconstitutional, said Sonoran attorney Dinorah Vega, who was the first to file such a request in November.
She said a “lack of political will” explains why the state has yet to make the changes.
