The 2020 annual point-in-time count found more than 7,400 people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County on a specific night in January. That number was up by more than 800 people from 2019.
Those numbers do not include residents who’ve lost their homes in the recession caused by the ongoing pandemic. But there are approaches to trying to reduce homelessness that appear to be working.
Samantha Batko, a senior research associate at the Urban Institute, researches homelessness and low-income housing programs. Batko joined The Show to talk about policies that work to get people into stable housing and how those policies are implemented.
