Mexico Hits New Records For Daily Coronavirus Cases, Deaths

Mexico has reported record high daily coronavirus case numbers for two consecutive days, with death tolls rising above 1,000 for the third day in a row on Thursday.

Mexico’s health ministry reported more than 13,734 new COVID-19 cases Thursday — nearly 400 more than the previous record set the day before. Wednesday had also marked a new record for coronavirus deaths, with 1,165 reported across he country. There were 1,044 death reported Thursday, and 1,065 on Tuesday.

The country is currently experiencing surge of case and deaths far outpacing peak numbers from the first wave during the summer, Health ministry official Ricardo Cortés said during a press conference Thursday.

The country’s accumulated total now stands at 1.49 million confirmed cases with more than 131,000 deaths — though experts say Mexico’s extremely low testing rate means that is likely a significant undercount.

In the state of Sonora, health officials are urging people to take greater caution as hospitals in some parts near maximum capacity.
