Early Wednesday morning, health care workers in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo became the first people in the state to receive doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
Sonoran leaders and hospital staff cheered as nurse Rodrigo Romero received the first vaccine administered in Sonora at an Hermosillo hospital Wednesday.
More than 14,600 doses of the coronavirus vaccine were distributed to 32 hospitals around the state Tuesday night. They’re slated for medical personnel who work directly with COVID-19 patients, and must be administered by this Saturday for the vaccine to maintain its effectiveness.
"The vaccine has arrived in Sonora," Health Secretary Enrique Clausen announced during a nightly press conference Tuesday. "Now it's a question of waiting our turn."
He urged Sonorans to continue taking precautions as they wait to be vaccinated. Coronavirus cases and deaths are still rising in the state, and several cities are now under "code red" as hospitals and medical equipment are nearing peak capacity.
After health care workers, the elderly and those with certain health conditions will be next in line for vaccination. Health officials estimate most medical personnel will receive the vaccine sometime in the next two months.
