MEXICO CITY — Some heads of state around the world are criticizing social media giants Facebook and Twitter for banning President Trump. Among them are the leaders of Germany, France and Mexico.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says private companies shouldn’t censor freedom of expression, comparing those decisions to prosecution brought in the past by the Holy Inquisition.
The president says social networks shouldn’t be used to incite violence, but that shouldn’t be an argument to suspend the people’s free speech.
He promised to look for an international agreement on the matter at the next summit of the G20, the forum representing the top economies of the world.
López Obrador says he’ll request the National Science and Technology Council to create a censorship-free social media platform.
