The recent resignation of the acting Homeland Security secretary has been used to try to sidestep court orders and approve a slew of Trump immigration policies.
An expert says it's unclear how this will affect the Biden administration’s ability to undo Trump’s work on immigration.
Chad Wolf quit as acting secretary this week. But kept the Homeland Security job to which he’d been confirmed.
Wolf’s new boss then gave him power to approve a host of measures like the so-called public charge rule.
The move may be illegal. And the incoming Biden administration could decide not to defend it in court. Biden could also quickly undo much of what Wolf just did. Some of it would take time though, said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy counsel for the American Immigration Council.
“I think it’s too early to tell whether or not this new move throws a wrench into the Biden administration’s plans to quickly reverse most of the Trump policies," Reichlin-Melnick said.
Biden faces intense pressure to quickly fulfill campaign promises on immigration.
