The coronavirus is continuing to have a big economic impact in neighboring Sonora.
Between November and December, well over 14,000 formal jobs were lost, the single largest monthly drop in the state during the pandemic to date. It also represented the third-largest percentage drop in the country, according to the most recent federal dataavailable.
There were two sizable gains this autumn, but with two consecutive months of losses, Sonora is now down nearly 40,000 jobs since February, before the first cases were confirmed and strict prevention measures were put into place.
Federal jobs data do not include informal jobs, which accounted for more than half of all employment before the pandemic and have swung much more dramatically during it.
