The inauguration of the nation’s 46th U.S. president led many world leaders to reach out — either personally or on social media — to congratulate Joe Biden and look forward to working with the U.S. on collective goals. Many of those leaders represent countries that have been allies of the U.S. for decades in groups like NATO, which former President Donald Trump found very little use for.
The term “liberal internationalism” was coined a couple of decades ago after the Cold War as observers tried to find a category or phrase to describe a new structure that included alliances between the U.S. and Europe and other nations. The Biden administration seems to point to a return toward liberal internationalism.
For more about that, The Show spoke with one of the people who came up with the term. John Ikenberry is a Princeton professor and author of the book, "A World Safe for Democracy."
