There are now 2.94 million people who call Sonora home, according to the 2020 census from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. That’s a roughly 1% increase from the 2010 census, the lowest growth rate in about a century, according to a release from INEGI.
Sonorans are also getting older. The average age is now 30, up from 26 a decade ago.
Access to internet improved dramatically, rising from just under 30% of households in 2010 to more than 60. Availability of cellphones and computers also rose.
And since 2000, rates of illiteracy more than halved, falling from 4.4% to 2% last year.
