Arizona Bill Proposes Higher Tax Deductions For College Funds

The Senate Finance Committee approved a bill that would allow Arizonans to divert more of the tax they owe the state to help their kids or grandkids attend college.

At the moment, you can deduct up to $4,000. If passed, this bill would increase that limit to $16,000.

Sen. David Livingston (R-Peoria) crafted the measure. He says it's an opportunity for all Arizonans. Sen. Kirsten Engel (D-Tucson) is not so sure.

“I just really question, you know, the ability of our lower income residents here to be able to take advantage of this," Engel said.

There are questions about how this might hurt state revenues. Livingston says there are no estimates yet.

The measure goes to the full Senate following a legal review.
