The mayor of Hermosillo announced that she will run for a second term in office — a first in the Sonoran capital.
"I am going to, for the first time in the history of Hermosillo, and to use constitution power that allows me, to go for reelection," said Mayor Célida López, a member of the President's Morena party.
Lopez can seek a second three-year term because of a 2014 election system overhaul allowing reelection for mayors and legislators — previously prohibited in Mexico.
She said seeking a second term is still new to many in the country, but that it gives constituents the choice to reward or punish elected officials based on their performance. And that an additional three years in office would provide continuity, the chance to take on bigger projects and reduce the costs of constant turnover.
Several other Sonoran mayors have also expressed interest in running again during Mexico’s elections this summer.
