An arson at a Mesa Walmart on Thursday may have caused up to $10 million in damage.
Mesa police say they reviewed security footage and saw a man collect items, including lighter fluid, from throughout the store, then set them on fire in the store’s garden center.
Police suspect he lit the fire as a diversion in an attempt to steal several items.
At least 40 firefighters from the Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix fire departments responded to the first-alarm blaze, which caused an estimated $6 million to $10 million in damage to the building and merchandise.
The suspect has since been apprehended and charged with felony arson and criminal damage.
