This week, Mexico’s National Electoral Institute ordered that a Sonoran gubernatorial candidate’s campaign ads be removed from the air. The ads had continued running beyond the permitted time period.
Alfonso Durazo of the president’s Morena party has officially declared his plans to run for governorof Sonora later this year.
But the National Electoral Institute ordered that several of his radio and television ads stop airing. The ads, the institute found, had continued running after Jan. 23, the end of the state’s designated pre-campaign period when such materials can be broadcast. The opposition PRI party had submitted a complaint over the continued transmissions.
Morena, however, has denied responsibility, arguing that TV and radio stations that continued broadcasting the promotional materials were doing so without the permission of the candidate or the party.
