Widows, Family Of Fallen Sonora Police Protest For Promised Government Aid

A group of about 30 families of Sonoran police officers who have died in the line of duty protested in the state capital Hermosillo over long-promised government assistance they say has never come.

Widows, parents, children and other family members of state and local police killed while doing their jobs demanded the government’s attention, marching through the streets and blocking roads.

More than five years ago, a victims fund was created to provide families of fallen officers with state support, including pensions and insurance payments. But they say they have yet to receive any of the promised financial assistance.

"And it's the law," said Rodrigo Salazar, a lawyer representing the families. "They're not asking for money or help or anything. This is what they're owed by law."

Late last year, after another protest, government leaders promised that families would receive the long-awaited payments by early January. But that hasn’t happened, and some families have been waiting as long as a decade for assistance.
