For the last four years, a nonprofit group in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo has been carrying out an annual survey to identify the needs and concerns among residents. Overwhelmingly, violence and drug addiction were cited as the city’s biggest issues.
A survey by Hermosillo ¿Cómo Vamos? found that violence was the most cited concern of more than a dozen issues respondents mentioned. More than 22% of people called it the city’s biggest problem, with drug addiction coming in a close second at 21%.
"We also see an increase in people that feel unsafe, that is to say somewhat are very unsafe," the group’s director Ernesto Urbina said during a press conference this week.
The number of people who feel unsafe in Hermosillo jumped from about about 36% in 2019 to nearly half of respondents in 2020.
Corruption was the third most commonly cited concern, and the portion of people who consider it the city's biggest issue increased to 11% from about 7% the three previous years the survey was conducted. Roads, public transportation, poverty and unemployment were also among the top issues for Hermosillo residents last year.
