Valley Of The Sun YMCA Partners With Uber To Help Older Adults Get Vaccinated

Getting a coronavirus vaccine can be challenging, even for those who are eligible. Some either can’t book an appointment online or they can’t get to their appointment. This can be especially difficult for older adults, who might not have family to help them. Now one nonprofit is making sure anyone who needs a lift gets one.

Jenna Cooper is with the Valley of the Sun YMCA.

"We've heard from a lot of folks that they're able to get an appointment, but they don't have a ride," she said.

Turns out, a longtime supporter of the Y heard the same thing. So, he made a donation, which allowed the Y to utilize an existing volunteer-led transportation program to get older adults vaccinated. They also did something else.

"The drivers are the volunteers, but also Uber," she explained. "You know, we know that there's a need for rides now across Maricopa County and with the Uber partnership, we're able to deploy those Ubers very quickly, all over the county."

And it's pretty innovative.

"There are no other YMCAs that I know that are doing this," said Cooper. "And I know Uber has a couple of partnerships across the country. They are partnering with LA County to do something similar. But as far as the nonprofit getting involved in helping to facilitate it, I think this is pretty unique. "

The program started running earlier this week.

To schedule a ride, call 602-212–6088 or email [email protected].
