After shipments of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine were delayed to Mexico, thousands of health care professionals in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, are finally set to receive their second inoculation this week.
More than 16,000 vaccine doses arrived in Sonora on Wednesday evening and were distributed to 36 public hospitals and clinics for front-line health care professionals.
It’s been more than five weeks since Sonora’s medical workers received the first dose starting on Jan. 12 — meaning the recommended 21 days between doses has lapsed. However, researchers have suggested that such delays are unlikely to be a problem.
In the United States, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has now updated its guidance to say people can wait up to six weeks, or 42 days, between doses when it’s not feasible to stick to the recommended schedule.
