MEXICO CITY — Women’s History Month is beginning in Mexico amid a controversy surrounding a gubernatorial candidate in the state of Guerrero. The man faces allegations of rape and sexual abuse, but feminists fear patriarchal politics may bolster his candidacy.
For weeks, feminists in Mexico have been speaking out about Félix Salgado Macedonio.
The former mayor of Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, is running for governor despite several allegations of sexual offenses.
He is a member of Morena, the Mexican president’s party, which has just determined that his candidacy will be put on hold and the state’s candidate pool will be reevaluated.
However, the party says the accusations against Salgado Macedonio are unfounded, while there is no judicial resolution yet.
Feminists say Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Morena are downplaying the accusations and favoring a political pact, instead of standing against harassment and gender discrimination.
