The number of local police working in Sonora appears to have fallen significantly over the last year.
Since December 2019, the number of municipal police dropped by roughly 14% to 4,551. That’s according to a recent reportfrom the Observatorio Sonora por la Seguridad.
Manuel Hoyos, the group’s director, said they’re uncertain what the principal reasons are for the decline. It came during a year when the state broke violence records, and several Sonoran cities were among the most violent in the country.
The Observatorio also released data on the proportion of police who have passed evaluations required to serve as armed officers. Just shy of 70% of municipal police have valid certifications, according to the report.
