For communities of color, the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately affected them. We’re once again seeing that with the vaccine rollout. One organization works with diverse communities about what is happening on the ground.
Suganya Karuppana is the chief medical officer at Valle Del Sol, which provides health care to underserved communities. She says for Latinos there are a lot of barriers.
"There are language barriers, there's transportation barriers. A lot of these multi-generational households have family members that are all caring for one another; dependents, either child dependents or older adults, that require a lot of support and care. Many people are working multiple jobs," Karuppana said.
And when it comes to getting the vaccine more barriers.
"And so they don't have time to try and try and try again on the internet to try to snag an appointment with these pods, or be on hold for extended periods of time," she said.
Misinformation about the jab is another hurdle Valle Del Sol is working to overcome.
