Pilot Program Targets Underserved Communities For COVID-19 Vaccine Relief

COVID-19 vaccinations have been administered to thousands of people In Arizona, most of them with the resources to go online and set up an appointment. As the state continues to ramp up its efforts, it has begun to look for ways to reach underserved communities. On Monday, dozens of taxis brought people from one underserved ZIP code to a Phoenix vaccination site.

“We know that transportation to one of the sites and access to the internet could be a barrier," said Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. "So we launched a targeted effort to either call or go door to door to those that are over the age of 65 in that ZIP code.”

The state conducts its outreach in both English and Spanish and plans to have a town hall later this week.

Although the pilot program focused on one ZIP code, the state plans to expand it in the near future.
