Arizona Cardinals signing J.J. Watt brings back memories of a Chicago Cardinals legend

When the Arizona Cardinals made the headline-grabbing news that they’d signed defensive end J.J. Watt, it also brought up a name from the franchise’s past.

Watt has always worn number 99, but that number is retired for the Cardinals, although the player that wore it took the field before many current fans were born.

In fact, Marshall Goldberg played for the Cardinals two home cities ago, back when the team was the Chicago Cardinals. But, the Goldberg family has agreed to allow Watt to wear number 99 with Arizona.

To learn about the last Cardinal to wear that number, The Show spoke with Joe Ziemba, who does a lot of research on the Chicago Cardinals.

Mark Brodie is a co-host of The Show, KJZZ’s locally produced news magazine. Since starting at KJZZ in 2002, Brodie has been a host, reporter and producer, including several years covering the Arizona Legislature, based at the Capitol.
