Maricopa County Drops Charges Against Phoenix Protesters, Plans To File New Ones

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is dismissing charges against 12 protesters who were arrested in downtown Phoenix last year.

In August 2020, protesters marched outside the Phoenix police headquarters. Several were arrested and charged with felony and misdemeanor offenses.

County Attorney Allister Adel made a statement about the charges late Tuesday.

“After reviewing these cases, I believe it is in the interest of justice to dismiss the current charges," Adel said. "However, I intend to refile different charges against some of these defendants based on their conduct during this event.”

Adel did not elaborate on the new charges she plans to file, saying her comments must be limited due to trial publicity rules.
