MEXICO CITY — Mexico is preparing for its federal elections in early June which, according to its National Electoral Institute, will be the largest ones in its history. But how are the electoral authorities preparing for them as the pandemic continues?
Lorenzo Córdova is president of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute. He said the country is ready to hold the elections following a protocol specifically designed to deal with the pandemic.
Córdova said only two people will be allowed simultaneously at the voting points. Face masks, social distancing and sanitizing gel are mandatory. Voting areas will be disinfected every three hours.
He said the protocol was successfully tested during a local election last October.
Mexico doesn’t use mail voting, except for those living overseas, and citizens cast their vote only on one day.
