COVID-19 vaccines are slowly rolling out for older adults in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, with the first doses in the state capital Hermosillo expected to arrive within the next week. Many of those vaccines may be administered at newly approved drive-thru sites.
In parts of Sonora and Mexico where inoculation against COVID-19 has begun for adults 60 and older, vaccine recipients have sometimes faced long waits in crowded spaces.
Sonora’s Health Secretary Enrique Clausen says two drive-through sites in Hermosillo should make the process quicker and safer.
Parking lots at the Estadio Sonora baseball stadium and the University of Sonora will be set up so that people can get the shot without exiting the car — similar to drive-thru sites in Arizona.
Additional walk-in sites will also be set up around the city.
Officials say about 70,000 doses will arrive in Hermosillo in the coming days — only enough to provide the first dose to about two-thirds of those eligible.
