MEXICO CITY — A police custody death in the Mexican Caribbean coast on Saturday resembling the George Floyd case is generating public outrage and concern among human rights activists. The death of a migrant woman is being considered a result of police brutality.
A video that went viral shows Salvadoran immigrant Victoria Esperanza Salazar crying for help while held against the street in Tulum by the police.
One officer is putting his knee on her neck until she is non-responsive. Salazar is later thrown on the back of the police truck by the officials.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Salazar was "brutally treated and murdered" by four police officers.
The officers have been arrested as the investigation continues.
Protests in Tulum continue, while activists say the killing is a hate crime due to Salazar’s nationality, gender and class.
