'A Steep Dropoff': Thousands Of Volunteers Needed At Arizona COVID-19 Vaccine Sites

More than 2 million Arizonans have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot — nearly 30% of the state. The success of vaccine distribution in Arizona is due in no small part to the army of volunteers who have been managing the administration of the shots since the initial deliveries in December.

Last week, the age requirements for vaccines were dropped to 16 for the Pfizer shot and 18 for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson shots. And the number of volunteers at vaccinations sites decreased.

Before the vaccination expansion, volunteers received shots as an incentive to work at the sites.

HandsOn Greater Phoenix is a nonprofit that helps coordinate volunteers with various efforts and causes in the region; they have been instrumental in staffing volunteers at the State Farm Stadium and Phoenix Municipal Stadium sites as well as a distribution point in Yuma.

Michaela Barnhart is the volunteer engagement manager with HandsOn Greater Phoenix, and The Show spoke with her for a progress report on volunteer turnout.
