Federal authorities are expecting so many migrant families to seek asylum at the U.S. border this year that they’ve contracted with a Texas-based group to help house them.
At least some beds the group named Family Endeavors has access to are in metro Phoenix.
Documents say the six-and-a-half month government contract with Family Endeavors is worth nearly $87 million. The money is to pay for more than 1,200 beds near the Southwest border, plus services like transportation, meals, translators and legal orientation for families allowed into the country so they join sponsors elsewhere in the United States while their immigration case goes forward.
Family Endeavors did not respond to a request for comment. Its website shows job openings related to shelter management and migrant aid in Chandler and Phoenix.
A coalition of Valley-based volunteers and faith groups has run a local shelter since 2019. The facility has received more migrants recently. But there is less room for people due to the pandemic.
