Leaders in Mexico say they are working to provide some relief to family members of a Sonoran journalist who went missing 16 years ago this month. The case remains unsolved.
Investigative reporter Alfredo Jimenez went missing while on assignment in Hermosillo on April 2, 2005. He has never been found, and no one has been held responsible for the crime.
Undersecretary of Human Rights Alejandro Encinas said that is in part because of the government's failure to investigate the disappearance.
"The attorney general at the time basically didn't do an investigation," Encinas said during a press conference Thursday. "It had already lagged, and the Attorney General's Office, and the Prosecutor's Office specialized in freedom of expression need to overcome that. His parents have a right to see that file and to be provided with information."
He said the current attorney general has said they will investigate the case but expressed concern that the office is denying access to the case files.
Encinas said the National Searching Commission is committed to finding the journalist, in response to demands from his family that his remains be returned to them.
