The governor of Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south, is asking that medical professionals be prioritized in Mexico’s vaccine rollout.
Specifically, Gov. Claudia Pavlovich is asking for health care workers not included in the first round of vaccinations for front-line personnel to get doses soon. That should include workers at both public and private hospitals, according to a release.
“We can’t leave these people out,” she said, pointing out the important work they’ve done during the pandemic.
In response to a reporter’s question Friday about the possibility of vaccinations for private providers, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declined to say that the idea has been rejected but that such workers would have to wait.
Pavlovich also expressed concern about the relatively low levels of vaccination in Sonora and across the country, saying that leaves Mexico vulnerable to another potentially serious wave of infections.
