Last spring, The Show covered the Violet Protest project, which aimed to enlist makers from across the country to produce textile squares that were equal parts red and blue. The makers are asked to not advocate for or against a specific political agenda, but rather to demonstrate commitment to a set of core values: compassion, creativity, candor, country over party or corporate influence and respect for others.
The plan is to collect these squares and send a package of them to each member of Congress and the U.S. Senate and ask members to share that commitment to those core values.
The project is the idea of Phoenix artist and educator Ann Morton, and it’s now on display at the Phoenix Art Museum through early September.
Squares that come in before August first will be added to the exhibit, before being shipped off to Washington, D.C.
The Show spoke with Morton for a check-in about how the project is going.
